5 Top Tips to Boost your SEAG GL Transfer Test Revision.

What is the SEAG GL Transfer Test?

The SEAG GL Transfer Test is the new name for the AQE and GL tests. The body responsible for administering the Transfer Test In Northern has changed. Until 2023 the tests were known to parents as the AQE or GL Transfer Tests. The new company is called  The School Entrance Assessment Group or (SEAG) for short. Over 60 Grammar school’s in Northern Ireland have signed up to admit their pupils for 2023 and beyond via this new GL style exam. The test is designed by GL Assessment who are known for writing 11 plus exams for schools across England, contains a mixture of multiple choice and free form answers. The new test will be administered on 2 Saturdays in November 2023 for the first time.

What can I do to support my child through the SEAG GL Transfer Test?

  • Don’t panic if your child is not getting 80% and 90% at this stage of the game. Try not to focus on scores at all at this stage. Look at every mistake as an opportunity to work on plugging the gaps in your child’s knowledge. They can’t possibly know it all at this stage!
  • Practise using the GL pupil answer sheets. These will be new to all children and they need to make sure they are recording their answers in the correct box and transferring the right information into the GL answer sheet. This might take a few papers to get the hang of so practise in this area is essential.
  • Look at the paper and point out their silly mistakes. What questions did they get wrong because of a calculation error and not because they did not know how to get the answer? Recalculate their score to let them see what they could have achieved. This will boost their confidence and make them concentrate more next time.
  • Get them to use the working out paper. They do not have to do sums in their head. They should have a blank piece of paper beside them when doing the test. Remind them to number each question on the working out paper so they can come back to it and check answers again if they have time. It is also useful when trying to work out what went wrong in the post test analysis.
  • Celebrate every success! Make a list as you go along of the topics they are getting right each week. This list should grow the more practice papers they do. If your child feels like they are making progress and succeeding they will keep it up.
