What are triangular Numbers?
Triangular numbers areย a series of numbers that are represented through a sequence of dots formed into equilateral triangles.
What does my child need to know about Triangular Numbers?
Transfer Test Tips – Triangular Numbers are one of a number of special numbers that your child must learn for the AQE and GL tests. Others include: square numbers, cube numbers, prime numbers, palindromes, multiples, factors and odd and even numbers.
This is a sequence of numbers that your child should learn for both the AQE and GL tests
- They need to learn all the triangular numbers between 0 and 100. Although I have rarely seen a question about one above 45!
- If your child is good at memorising sequences then go ahead and learn the sequence: ๐ญ, ๐ฏ, ๐ฒ, ๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐ญ๐ฑ, ๐ฎ๐ญ, ๐ฎ๐ด, ๐ฏ๐ฒ, ๐ฐ๐ฑ, ๐ฑ๐ฑ, ๐ฒ๐ฒ, ๐ณ๐ด, ๐ต๐ญ
- or, teach them to add 1 to the amount added each time e.g. to find the 4th triangular number we add 4 to the 3rd triangular number, to find the 5th triangular number we add 5 to the 4th triangular number. (see the picture below)
- The bottom line of each triangle increases by 1 each time. So the fifth triangular number has 5 dots on the bottom row, the 10th has 10 dots etcโฆ
- Remind them that 1 is a triangular number, a square and a cube number. It is not a prime number. The first prime number is 2.
