Nets of cubes refer to when the square faces of a cube are separated at the edges and laid out flat they make a two-dimensional figure called a net. 

What does my child need to know about Nets of Cubes?

Transfer Test Tips – Nets of Cubes come up regularly in the SEAG GL Transfer Tests. They are part of the 3 Dimensional Shape topic. Your child should try and memorise all the nets that form a cube.

Quite often the question will ask your child to identify a net that makes a cube from a group of nets, or it will ask them to identify a net that is not a cube from a group.

There are 11 cube nets to learn. Therefore, if they can master these they will ace any cube net question they come across.

• Learn the 3 groups of cube nets and how to identify them from the picture.
• Blow this info picture up and cut the cubes out. Stick them to the fridge, or the bedroom ceiling! Try to get the images of these nets into their heads so that when they come to tackling a question they have all the facts they need.

AQE Registration Date

Registration opens on the 4th May 2022 and closes on Friday 23rd September 2022.

Online payments should be made prior to registering your child for the test. Make the payment on the AQE website payment portal.

THEN register your child for the 2022 AQE test on the AQE registration page.

Do not use the AQE past papers

Your child’s school may have mentioned this.  The reason is, schools usually use AQE past papers from September in Primary 7 onwards.  Teachers like these papers to be unseen so they can get a true reflection of how your child is doing.

On Target AQE Practice Papers are specially written Staged Difficulty AQE tests. There are 3 levels of difficulty.

Level 1 has 27 questions worth 30 marks, to be completed in 25 minutes.

Level 2 has 35 questions worth 40 marks, to be completed in 45 minutes.

Level 3 has 58 questions worth 64 marks to be completed in 1 hour and 10 minutes replicating real past papers. 

We have undertaken an in depth analysis of all the AQE past papers from 2011 to 2021 and have created our practice papers to model the questions your child will tackle in the real tests.  This means your child can get real AQE practise without using the actual past papers!

AQE 2022 Specification

To take account of the considerable disruption caused by Covid-19 to children’s education over the past two years, the AQE have made changes to the assessment in 2022.

• Pupils will be given an extra 10 minutes to complete each paper. Children will have 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete the test.
• The language within the English and Maths questions will be made more accessible.
• The length of the English passages will be shortened where appropriate.
• Certain topic areas will be omitted from the Mathematics Specification.

If your child is sitting the 2022 AQE or GL tests they will be doing a lot of practice papers by now. Luckily, this year children sitting the AQE tests will get 10 minutes extra time to help combat learning loss from the pandemic. Read our 10 top tips to utilise extra time in the AQE and GL Transfer Tests.

Some children make finish the test quickly and have time left over. It’s important to make sure they know they should not just sit back and relax. For instance, if they practise finding their own mistakes you may even find that they become more aware and start making less silly mistakes in the AQE tests. The techniques below can be used in both the AQE and GL tests if your child finishes before time is up.

How to utilise extra time in the AQE and GL tests

1. First, check you have answered all the questions.

Even if you are unsure how to tackle a question it is better to have an answer than no answer. This is especially true in multiple choice questions where there is a chance you will get it right, even if you guess!

2. Make sure you have not left any pages out.

Believe it or not it is very common for students to leave out entire pages because they have turned over a double page without realising. Start at the beginning of the paper and turn the pages, counting the page numbers as you go to check you have not turned over two pages at once.

3. Put a circle or a big star beside any questions you are not sure about.

This will mean it is easy to find these questions if you have time left over. You can then go back and have another go.

4. Show your working out

This makes it easier to check your answers. If you are using a separate sheet of paper for working out, make sure you number the question so you can easily go back and check your work.

5. Double check any questions that state that you need to be careful with your spelling.

In the AQE the words, “be careful with your spelling” will be written in bold in the question. This means that you will only get the mark if your spelling is correct.

6. Double check any questions that require two answers.

Many students lose marks as they have only ticked one box instead of two. The question will state, “tick two boxes” if this required. Some students may also write a word in the box instead ticking. Make sure you have followed all the instructions correctly.

7. Check your units of measure.

For example, the question might be in centimetres but the answer is asked for in metres. Make sure that the answers you have written are in the correct unit of measure.

8. Go back over any questions that ask for a noun, verb, adjective or adverb

Double check the answer you have given is correct. Always read the word in the sentence as some words can have more than one classification depending on the context of the sentence they are written.

9. Make sure you have written the answer on the line provided.

Sometimes it is easy to do all the working out for a question, get it correct but then forget to write the answer on the answer line. Make sure you do or you will lose the mark.

10. Use every minute of the test time.

You should never be sitting doing nothing. If you have time left over after you have checked everything then use it to look at the hardest questions again. You never know, you might find something you missed!

How Can I Help My Primary 5 Prepare For The Transfer Test? This is a question that we get asked a lot by parents! Is it too soon to start preparing for the tests in Primary 5?

Understandably, you might be worried that starting too soon may put unnecessary pressure on your child. Transfer Test preparation is a long haul and every child has different needs. AQE January 2021 Test Dates: Saturday 9th January, Saturday 16th January and Saturday 23rd January 2020.

Registration for the AQE tests opens on Wednesday 29th April. You will have until Friday 9th October to register your child for the test. It is advised to get in early if you want to have your first choice of school in which to sit the test.

The results will be issued on Saturday 6th March.

Children will be given an extra 10 minutes for each paper, meaning that each paper lasts for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
