Transfer Test Tricky vocabulary aims to boost your child’s vocabulary using key Transfer Test skills.

The AQE and GL tests require your child to have a wide range of vocabulary to achieve a high mark.

As teachers we are constantly encouraging our students to read more in order to boost their vocabulary.  The more you read, the more words you will know!

However, what if your child is a reluctant reader and you know that their range of vocabulary is holding them back in practice papers?

This is where Transfer Test Tricky Vocabulary can help!

• We have chosen 150 of the most difficult words from past papers.
• Your child will be asked to investigate 5 words per week.   They will also add one tricky word from their own weekly reading.
• Your child will identify if the word is a noun, verb, adjective or adverb.
• They will write a definition for the word, use it in a sentence and identify antonyms, synonyms and rhyming words.

This thorough investigation of each word is the key to learning and retaining new words but will also allow them to practise key AQE and GL Transfer Test skills.

Every Transfer Test paper has what we call A* questions.  This resource is designed to help your child build their confidence with A* questions.    The more practise you get of these questions the more chance you have of scoring highly in the AQE and GL tests.  Transfer Test Tricky Maths will allow you and your child to practise these difficult maths questions and get the practice you need to get top marks in the test.

We have created 4 booklets that cover all areas of the Transfer Test maths curriculum.  We have researched the most difficult questions using past papers.  Also included is a detailed guide to working out the answers.  This provides parents with a step by step guide for working out the answer to each question.  If your child gets the answer wrong you can go through the problem together to work out the solution.

On Target Tables, Division and Fraction Of is perfect if your child has difficulty retaining tables facts.

The On Target Tables, Division and Fraction Of booklet teaches times tables using the “over learning” principle.  Our brains retain information and facts if we learn them repetitively over a period of time.

In this book you will learn sets of times tables and then repeat that learning until you get the individual times tables correct over 3 consecutive days.  The act of repeating the learning will imprint the facts in the memory.

After learning the facts you can then focus in on the “tricky facts”.  These are the facts that you found the hardest to recall.  These can be focused on repetition.

You can use this book in 2 different ways.

1. If your child is globally weak in their recall of times table facts we recommend you start with On Target Times Tables before starting this booklet.  This focuses exclusively on times table facts.
2. If you know which facts your child is weakest in you can skip straight to those pages and just practise those.
3. Start at the beginning and work your way through. This is the option I would most recommend. We want to fill in any gaps in your child’s knowledge and build their confidence in times tables.  Starting at the beginning will make them realise that they know more than they think and will make sure that they become fully confident.

Why is it so important to know your facts by heart?

Times table knowledge is vital as quick recall of times table, division and fraction of facts is your child’s passport to access higher level topics in maths.

Your child needs to be able to recall these facts efficiently and timely or they will find all other maths topics difficult.  A strong knowledge of these facts will allow your child to excel in confidence and understanding in all areas of the maths curriculum.
